Novol 90846 Protect 390 - Acrylic Primer (800ml) – High-Solid Grey Filler
Prepare your panels with the professional-grade Novol Protect 390, a high-solid (HS) acrylic primer/filler. This 800ml unit is engineered for efficiency and superior surface leveling. Its advanced formula features excellent filling properties and anti-sag additives, allowing for the application of thick layers to smooth out even significant surface irregularities.
The Grey color provides a neutral, high-opacity base that is ideal for most topcoat colors, ensuring uniform coverage with fewer coats of paint.
Key Features & Benefits
- High Filling Power: Capable of bridging deep sanding marks and imperfections, significantly reducing the need for extensive putty work.
- Short Drying Time: Designed for rapid repair cycles, reaching a sandable state much faster than standard primers.
- Excellent Adhesion: Bonds securely to a wide range of substrates including steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, polyester putties, and old paint coatings.
- Superior Isolation: Effectively isolates polyester fillers from acrylic topcoats, preventing "mapping" or chemical reactions that ruin the final finish.
- Anti-Corrosive Properties: Contains high-quality resins and additives that provide a reliable first line of defense against rust.
- Versatile Application: Can be applied as a high-build filler or a thinner smoothing primer depending on the mixing ratio.
Professional Application Strategy
For the best results with Protect 390, precision in mixing and application is key.
Application Steps:
- Preparation: Clean and degrease the surface. Sand the substrate (P240–P320 for putties, P120 for steel) and degrease again.
- Mixing: Mix in a 4:1 ratio with Novol H 5520 hardener. If a lower viscosity is needed for priming, add up to 10% Novol Thin 850 acrylic thinner.
- Layers: Apply 2 to 3 layers. This primer allows for "wet-on-wet" application with very short flash-off times (approx. 0–10 mins).
- Sanding: Once fully cured, dry sand with P360–P500 or wet sand with P600–P1000 for a mirror-smooth finish.
Expert Insight: Protect 390 is a "high-solid" product, meaning it has a higher concentration of pigment and resin. This means less solvent evaporation and more product left on the panel, providing a much thicker protective and leveling layer per pass than standard primers.
