Novol 90845 Protect 390 – High-Build Acrylic Primer (Black, 800ml)
Set the perfect dark foundation for your paintwork with Novol Protect 390. This 800ml unit is a high-performance 4:1 Acrylic Primer specifically tinted in Deep Black. It is engineered for modern automotive refinishing where a dark undercoat is essential for achieving deep, vibrant colors and reducing the number of basecoat layers required.
Protect 390 is a "high-fill" primer, meaning it possesses excellent vertical stability and the ability to level out heavy sanding marks (P180 - P240) without sagging.
The Power Mix: 4:1 Ratio
This is a professional 2K system that requires a specific chemical activator to reach its full hardness and sanding properties.
- Mixing Ratio: 4:1 (4 parts Primer : 1 part Hardener).
- Required Hardener: Novol H 5520 (Standard) or H 5521 (Fast).
- Thinner: Add 10% to 20% Novol THIN 850 depending on whether you want a "high-build" filler or a "primer-surfacer" consistency.
Key Features & Benefits
- Optimized for Dark Topcoats: The black pigment provides the ideal "ground coat" for black, dark blue, charcoal, and deep metallic paints, preventing light-colored primer "grin-through" if stone chips occur.
- Superior Filling Power: Its high solid content allows it to fill deep scratches and minor surface irregularities with ease.
- Fast Curing: Reaches sanding readiness in approximately 3 hours at 20°C or just 30 minutes at 60°C.
- Anti-Corrosive Properties: Contains specialized additives that provide an extra layer of protection against rust on properly prepared steel.
- Excellent Adhesion: Bonds reliably to steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, polyester putties, and old sanded paint coatings.
Professional Application Strategy
Black primer requires a clean environment; any dust will show up immediately on the dark surface.
- Preparation: Clean the substrate with Novol Plus 780. Sand the surface with P180–P240 for dry sanding or P320 for wet.
- Mixing: Combine the primer and hardener first, stir well, then add your thinner. Tip: Inaccurate mixing can lead to "solvent entrapment," causing the primer to shrink later.
- Application:
- Apply 2 to 3 layers.
- Allow 5–10 minutes of flash-off time between coats (the surface should turn matte).
- Sanding: Once fully dry, start with P400 and finish with P500–P600 for a smooth, paint-ready surface.
Expert Insight: Protect 390 is part of the Novol Spectral spectral-color system. If you are spraying a transparent or "poor-covering" dark metallic, using a black primer can save you 2 to 3 coats of expensive basecoat paint, paying for itself in a single job.
