Novol 90016 Protect 380 - Sprayable Polyester Filler (800ml + 80ml Hardener)
Achieve a perfectly level surface on large or complex panels with Novol Protect 380, a high-performance sprayable polyester filler. This kit includes 800ml of liquid filler and its dedicated 80ml hardener, offering a unique middle ground between a traditional spreadable putty and a high-build acrylic primer.
It is specifically designed for automotive restoration and industrial applications where traditional hand-applied putty would be too time-consuming or difficult to apply smoothly over large areas.
Key Features & Benefits
- Superior Leveling: Effectively fills deep sanding marks (up to P180), pinholes, and minor surface ripples over expansive areas like roofs, bonnets, or side panels.
- Extreme Build: Capable of creating a very thick layer without the risk of sagging or "running" common with acrylic primers.
- Easy Sanding: Once cured, it sands exceptionally well, providing a crisp, flat foundation that does not gum up abrasives.
- Low Shrinkage: High-solid polyester resins ensure the filler remains stable, preventing "sink-back" issues that can ruin a high-gloss finish later.
- Excellent Adhesion: Bonds powerfully to bare steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, glass-reinforced plastics (GRP), and old, sanded paint coatings.
Professional Application Strategy
Because this is a polyester-based spray, it behaves differently than standard paint.
Application Steps:
- Preparation: Clean and degrease with Novol Plus 780. Sand the substrate with P120–P180.
- Mixing: Mix the filler and hardener in a 10:1 ratio. Be precise; too much hardener causes brittleness, while too little leads to a "tacky" cure.
- Thinning: If necessary, use only a dedicated Polyester Thinner (max 5–10%). Never use acrylic thinner in this product.
- Spraying: Apply in 2 to 3 layers. Allow a 10–15 minute flash-off time between coats to let solvents escape.
- The "Isolation" Rule: Like all polyester fillers, Protect 380 is slightly porous. You must apply an acrylic primer (like Protect 330) over this filler before applying your final basecoat or topcoat to seal it.
Expert Insight: Use a Guide Coat (a dry powder or a light mist of contrasting spray paint) before sanding. This will highlight any remaining low spots or ripples, ensuring your panel is "laser-straight" before you move to the priming stage.
