Novol 32146 Thin 870 Basecoat Thinner (5L) – Professional Solvent for Metallic & Solid Bases
Achieve the perfect spray consistency and flake orientation with Novol Thin 870. This 5-litre bulk unit is a high-purity solvent mixture specifically formulated for thinning solvent-borne basecoats.
Unlike universal thinners, Thin 870 is engineered to interact precisely with automotive basecoat resins, ensuring uniform pigment distribution and preventing common metallic paint defects like "mottling" or "clouding."
Key Features & Benefits
- Metallic Control: Optimized for metallic and pearl finishes, ensuring that the aluminum flakes lay flat and uniform for a consistent "flip" and flop.
- Superior Flow & Leveling: Reduces the viscosity of the basecoat to provide a smooth, thin film that doesn't "pile up," which is critical for a high-quality clearcoat foundation.
- Standard Evaporation Rate: A "Standard" speed thinner designed for use in typical workshop temperatures (18°C – 25°C), providing a balanced flash-off time.
- High Purity: Formulated without recycled solvents, ensuring no chemical reactions or "blooming" occurs during the drying process.
- Bulk Value: The 5-litre container is the most cost-effective choice for professional body shops and large-scale restoration projects.
- Universal Basecoat Compatibility: While optimized for Novol systems, it is compatible with most high-quality solvent-borne basecoat brands.
Professional Mixing Strategy
The amount of Thin 870 required depends on your spray gun setup and the specific basecoat brand instructions.
Common Mixing Ratios:
- Standard Mix: Usually 1:1 or 2:1 (Basecoat to Thinner) by volume.
- Viscosity Check: Aim for a "water-like" consistency (approx. 15–17 seconds in a DIN4 flow cup) for the best metallic orientation.
- Application:
- Apply in 2 to 3 thin "closed" layers.
- Use a 1.3mm to 1.4mm nozzle at approx. 2.0 bar (29 PSI).
- Flash-off: Ensure the basecoat has turned completely matte (approx. 10–15 mins) before applying the next coat or the clearcoat.
Expert Insight: Never use "Standard Universal Thinner" (Gun Wash) in your basecoat. Universal thinners often contain moisture or recycled impurities that can cause "fish-eyes" or prevent metallic flakes from settling correctly, leading to a patchy, uneven color match.
