Question 1

Bosch Glow Plugs

Accepted Answer

Diesel engines, unlike petrol engines, do not use spark plugs to induce combustion. Instead, they rely solely on compression to raise the temperature of the air to a point where the diesel combusts spontaneously when introduced to the hot high-pressured air. The high pressure and spray pattern of the diesel ensures a controlled, complete burn. Bosch develops and manufactures glow plugs in close cooperation with leading vehicle manufacturers. In doing so, Bosch can call on its 115 years of experience in the industry and its unique cross-system expertise in automotive technology. Bosch works in close collaboration with vehicle manufacturers to develop each glow plug for original equipment, tailored perfectly to the requirements of each engine. This guarantees the highest level of quality and reliability to not only fulfil the specific requirements of car manufacturers, but are also the perfect choice for spare parts.

Question 4

Helpful Tips

Accepted Answer

Glow plugs don’t require replacement very often, they can go years and many miles before replacement is a must. However, most manufacturers would suggest having a replacement installed every 40,000km while type and condition of the glow plug is a key factor. Some key characteristics that indicate a glow plug change are; difficulty with starting your vehicle especially in cold weather, irregular excessive smoke emitted from the exhaust system and inferior overall performance. Mis-firing glow plugs can also have an adverse effect on fuel economy too, that’s why we recommend having your plugs inspected at minimum 20,000km.
