A car wishbone, commonly known as the control arm, is a component in the front suspension system of many cars. A wishbone and MacPherson strut are the most widely used form of front suspension systems. Wishbones are a very important suspension component as they link the spindle, hubs and wheels to the vehicle’s chassis. When they become worn, it can cause problems for the vehicle that may compromise handling, comfort, and safety. Firstly, it is essential to determine the type of suspension system that is in your vehicle e.g. double wishbone or MacPherson strut (classic pseudo, pseudo with fictive steering axis or pseudo with independent steering axis). Some important information for selecting the correct wishbone is the fitment position (front, left/ right, upper or lower), cone size and date limitation of the unit. As car manufacturers regularly update certain peripherals and design of their models, some wishbones will only be suitable for particular models of certain years.

Over time, the bushings or ball joints on the wishbone wear out and can cause all sorts of problems. Usually a problematic wishbone assembly will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver of a potential problem that should be serviced. Some symptoms include; steering wheel vibration, steering wandering (causing the steering to pull to the left or right, requiring a constant correction from the driver in order to steer the vehicle straight) and clunking noises. The wishbones on a vehicle are very important suspension components, if you suspect that your vehicle’s control arms may be defective or worn, have the vehicle’s suspension inspected by a professional technician.
