Some other key indicators are black smoke from the exhaust, rough engine noise and poor fuel economy. If you're driving mostly on city streets or dusty roads, it's a good idea to change the air filter in your car more often.

What are the signs of a bad air filter?

One of the most noticable signs is a decrease in fuel economy. When the air filter is dirty, it’s harder to get the air in, and the engine has to utilise more resources and work harder. A lack of clear air flow can also cause ignition problems and can affect the emission control system of the car. Is your acceleration jumpy, or less powerful? Hearing a spluttering sound when the car is idle? When you visually inspect the air filter, keep in mind that sometimes an air filter can get clogged with a build up of particles that are too small to see. However, if you notice that the filter is gray or full of particles, it’s certainly a sign that it's worn and needs replacing.
