{"id":578,"date":"2016-11-30T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-30T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T23:00:00","slug":"drink-driving-limits-in-ireland-reduced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/micksgarageblog.org\/drink-driving-limits-in-ireland-reduced\/","title":{"rendered":"Drink Driving Limits in Ireland Reduced"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\">As reported here on The Filter back in August, the new drink driving laws in Ireland come into effect from midnight tomorrow, Thursday 27th October, reducing the maximium amount of alcohol in a drivers bloodstream to as little as 20 milligrams per 100ml of blood.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-ZffcsZ87kak\/T_akqLaZd_I\/AAAAAAAAAV4\/FQKysR4oHiY\/s1600\/dont-drink-drive.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"96\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-ZffcsZ87kak\/T_akqLaZd_I\/AAAAAAAAAV4\/FQKysR4oHiY\/s320\/dont-drink-drive.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\">The limit is being reduced to come in line with European levels &#8211; here is the breakdown of what the new laws mean:<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\"><b>Overall limit is being reduced from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml of blood.&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\">You will be subject to the <b>lower limit of 20mg<\/b> if you are one of the following:<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white;\">Professional driver (bus, goods vehicle and public service vehicle drivers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white;\">Learner driver<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white;\">Newly qualifed driver (up to 2 years after passing the driving test)&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white;\">Driver who can not present their licence on being stopped by the Gardai<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\">New Penalty Points system is now also in place to deal with these drink driving offences<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white;\">Under the current system, all drivers caught drink driving, regardless of the amount of alcohol in their blood, are prosecuted in court, and disqualified from driving for 12 months if convicted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white;\">Under the new laws, Gardai have powers allowing them to impose three penalty points and an on-the-spot fine of \u20ac200 for motorists caught slightly above the new legal limit of 50mg, with further, heavier sanctions such as disqualification being applied if there is a higher amount of alcohol is found in their blood.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\">The Gardai have stated that they intend to step up their checkpoints this coming bank holiday weekend as the new laws take effect.
