This will also vary depending on experience and the equipment you have. If you have the luxury of a&nbsp;ramp\/lift the job will be much quicker and easier than with axle stands.&nbsp;A second pair of hands will be a huge help. We&nbsp;recommend working with a friend, not only to make the job easier but also for safety reasons.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-getting-started\" class=\"wp-block-heading public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><span data-offset-key=\"c902e-0-0\">Getting started:<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4u60\" data-offset-key=\"cgoi2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cgoi2-0-0\"><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"cgoi2-0-0\">Carfully<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cgoi2-1-0\"> Raise and Support the car on rigid axle&nbsp;stands, rated to support the vehicle weight. Position the stands <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"cgoi2-2-0\">carefully<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cgoi2-3-0\"> to avoid damaging the undercarriage of the car.&nbsp;You&#8217;ll want the car quite high to get greatest leverage on the M14 caliper carrier bolts. (they&#8217;re <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"cgoi2-4-0\">extremely<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cgoi2-5-0\"> tight)<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4u60\" data-offset-key=\"ds2h3-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"ds2h3-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ds2h3-0-0\">Before you start working on the brakes check the brake fluid. You will find this in the master cylinder reservoir. If it is full to the top you may want to remove some of the fluid; enough to drop the level by 40-50%. Why would you do this? If the reservoir is too full, compressing the caliper pistons may push brake fluid back out. The cap at the master cylinder reservoir will leak, allowing it to spill on the body where it may damage the paint. Recheck the fluid level after the brake job is complete, and top it off, if needed.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3174 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0192-1024x683_a7e156.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\"><\/figure><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4u60\" data-offset-key=\"1v5ui-0-0\">\n<h3 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1v5ui-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1v5ui-0-0\">Step 1:&nbsp;Remove the brake caliper.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0169-1024x683_345d48.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" class=\"wp-image-3182\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">  .  <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0165-1024x683_227db5.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" class=\"wp-image-3186\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_01631-1024x683_28c29e.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" class=\"wp-image-3183\" style=\"width:830px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0170-1024x683_2444e1.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" class=\"wp-image-3187\" style=\"width:832px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-offset-key=\"5bk9-0-0\"> We had to use 3 extensions. A universal joint and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.micksgarage.com\/d\/breaker-bars-and-torque-wrenches\/products\/4532238\/12-breaker-bar-600mm---chrom\"><span data-offset-key=\"5bk9-1-0\">600mm long breaker bar.<\/span><\/a><span data-offset-key=\"5bk9-2-0\"> We threaded them between the upright, shock and anti-roll bar. You&#8217;ll also need a LOT of force to get them undone!<\/span> Once you have them undone, remove them completely and remove\u00a0the caliper carrier<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-remove-the-brake-disc\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remove the brake disc:<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0172-1024x683_ed80db.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" class=\"wp-image-3188\" style=\"width:826px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0179-1024x683_ba7290.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" class=\"wp-image-3190\" style=\"width:818px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0198-1024x683_1d5218.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" class=\"wp-image-3197\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remove the small locating screw on the disc. Give the surface of the hub a good scrub with a wire brush or sandpaper. Make sure you clean the caliper, carrier and the new brake disc with brake cleaner <span data-offset-key=\"9cif7-0-0\">Fit the new disc and the retaining screw.\u00a0Apply a small amount of brake assembly lube (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.micksgarage.com\/g\/mounting-paste\/products\/8c6e2908755\/textar-mounting-paste\"><span data-offset-key=\"9cif7-1-0\">Ceratec is ideal<\/span><\/a><span data-offset-key=\"9cif7-2-0\">) to the guide pins. You can also apply this to the brake pad sliding surfaces. Reinstall the brake caliper carrier. Torque the attachment bolts to 90 Nm (66 ft-lb) plus 90 degrees. \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" class=\"wp-image-3198 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0199-1024x683_ef42ef.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-refitting\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Refitting:<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0182-1024x683_968056.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" class=\"wp-image-3192\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0183-1024x683_d2cef3.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" class=\"wp-image-3193\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0185-1024x683_16665c.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" class=\"wp-image-3195\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imagetin.com\/images\/micksgarage-ie\/421a2477-0\/img_0191-1024x683_6a11b2.jpg\" alt=\"VW Golf Rear Brake Discs and Pads\" class=\"wp-image-3196\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5000302041802585;width:836px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Install the new pads, being careful not to get any oil or greasy fingerprints on the brake friction lining. Press them tight against the disc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">To reinstall the caliper you&#8217;re going to need a special Volkswagen\/Audi Group (VAG) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.micksgarage.com\/g\/brake-wind-back-tools\/products\/ad7e3401566\/21-pcs-brake-wind-back-tool-set\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.micksgarage.com\/g\/brake-wind-back-tools\/products\/ad7e3401566\/21-pcs-brake-wind-back-tool-set\">caliper wind-back tool<\/a>. The piston in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.micksgarage.com\/d\/brake-calipers\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.micksgarage.com\/d\/brake-calipers\">brake caliper<\/a> does not simply compress, it winds back into the caliper on a thread.<\/span> <span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the caliper piston retracted the caliper should slide over the disc. Align the holes in the caliper carrier\u00a0with the slide pins. Push the M8 caliper bolts through the caliper carrier\u00a0holes. Next screw them into the slide pin threaded holes. Hold the slide pin hex with a 15 mm open ended spanner and tighten the bolts with a 13 mm socket. Grab the torque wrench and tighten\u00a0to 35 Nm (26 ft-lb) <span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Reinstall the road wheels and torque the wheel bolts, tightening in a star pattern to 120 Nm (89 ft-lb). \u00a0Make sure the cap on the brake fluid reservoir in the engine bay is on securely<\/span> <span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">It&#8217;s very important, after lowering the car and reinstalling the road wheels to pump the brake pedal several times to properly position the caliper pistons against the pads. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Also check the handbrake operation, both apply and release. Once everything is ok there, check and top up\u00a0the fluid level\u00a0if required.<\/span> Repeat the same procedure for the other side&#8230;. and bang &#8211; you&#8217;re done!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
