Public backlash against the\u00a0very first\u00a0vehicles on the roads resulted in the passing of the Locomotive Act\u00a0in 1865, which, amongst other things required self-propelled vehicles on public roads in the United Kingdom to be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag and blowing a horn!\u00a0The case for the motor car wasn&#8217;t helped much, when unfortunately Mrs Bridget Driscoll from Croyden was struck by a truck (travelling at 4mph) and killed in 1896.    Since that point,\u00a0engineers have been striving to make motor vehicles safer for both occupants and pedestrians alike.
