We hear you! Before you invest in a roof tent and trade the driveway for the wilderness you need to know that choosing the right TentBox roof bar setup for your vehicle and knowing your limitations are crucial.

It’s an exciting move, but before you hoist 60kg+ of gear onto your car roof, you need to fully understand the physics at play.
A roof tent isn’t just standard cargo; it is a structural addition to your vehicle. If your mounting system isn’t up to the task, you aren’t just risking a scratched roof, you’re risking a significant failure. We’re going to help you understand everything that there is to know about driving with a roof tent and roof bars so that you get it right first time, and every time.

Understanding Your Roof Type

Not all car roofs are created equal. Before looking at tents, you must identify your vehicle’s roof profile:

Raised Rails: These look like grab rails, running along the sides of the roof with a clear gap between the rail and the car (one you can fit your hand under). These are generally the most versatile for tent mounting because they allow for a wide spread of the roof bars.

Solid (Flush) Rails: These run the length of the roof but sit tight against the car roof with no gap. They are sleek and aerodynamic but require specific vehicle-fit feet to clamp onto the inner and outer grooves.

Roof Mounted Fixed Points: Look for small plastic flaps or removable slugs in your roof gutters. These hide threaded holes pre-drilled by the manufacturer. These are incredibly strong but offer zero flexibility in where the roof bars sit.

Door Frame Fixed Points: Look for pre-drilled holes in the door frame indicating where roof bars are to be screwed in. These are strong, but not strong enough to support the weight of a roof tent, and also offer no flexibility in where the roof bars sit.

Bare Roof (Door Clamps): If your roof is smooth, you’ll need to use bars that hook into the door frame. Proceed with caution here. We, along with all the major roof tent manufacturers, explicitly advise against using clamp-style bars due to the risk of the door seal deforming or the clamp shifting under heavy load… (or the tent just sliding off the roof!).

Dynamic vs Static Load Weights – The Lowdown

This is where most people get caught out. Every vehicle, and every roof bar set has two distinct weight ratings, dynamic weight, and stationary weight.

Dynamic Weight (The Driving Limit)

This is the maximum weight your roof can safely support while the vehicle is in motion.

When you hit a pothole at 80km/h, a 70kg tent doesn’t weigh 70kg anymore; centrifugal force and gravity multiply that weight (G-force).

Your roof tent + your roof bars must be under the vehicle’s dynamic limit (usually 75kg or 100kg – check your car owners manual).

Static Weight (The Stationary Limit)

This is the weight the car can hold when it is parked.

Generally, the static limit is 3 to 4 times the dynamic limit. If your car has a 75kg dynamic limit, it can safely support roughly 225kg–300kg when stationary. This should roughly cover the weight of the tent, the roof bars, ladder, and one / two adults sleeping inside.

Important Advice : Always check your vehicle’s manual for the “Maximum Permissible Roof Load.” If the manual says 75kg is your dynamic weight, and your tent weighs 70kg, you only have 5kg left for the bars themselves… and you are right on the edge.

What Can Go Wrong?

If you ignore load ratings, you’re increasing the chance for physics to win (now, we’re not trying to scare you, but we need to make you aware of what can happen). Here are some of the real life examples we have seen when things go wrong on each type of setup.

Fixed Point roof bar systems:

Fixed Point Failure: While the bolts are strong, the sheet metal around the threaded hole can “dimple” or crush inward under the weight of two adults. This essentially destroys the fixed point system and damages the roof at the same time.

Clamp Roof Bar systems:

Clamp Displacement: Door-frame clamps rely on tension. Under the shifting weight of someone getting in and out of bed, those clamps can millimetres-at-a-time slide out of position, potentially popping off at anytime.

Door deformity: We have seen door frames bend under the force of the clamp being under such tension that it pushes against the frame of the door, causing it to bend away from the car.

Headliner damage: Think about what’s under your roof, the internal headliner. This is usually only held on with plastic clips, which can snap and become dislodged under more extreme pressure. While it might seem like minor damage, it can be awkward and expensive to fix this properly.

Our Advice:

Here’s our advice for using roof tents, whatever roof type / roof bar system you have:

Raised rail & solid rail roof bar systems: Use a roof tent and have a blast! Check the weights and make sure you’re under the max.

Fixed point roof bar systems: Use with caution – you need to have a heightened awareness of the weights and make sure you’re well under the max of both dynamic and stationary limits.

Door clamp roof bar systems: Do not use a roof tent.

Are Load Stabilizers the Answer?

Some people might try to cheat the weight limit by using blocks or rubber stabilizers between the bar and the roof. We definitely don’t recommend this.

The biggest misconception is that the entire roof of a car is a structural platform, and it isn’t. A car roof is engineered like a bridge – the strength is at the the pillars and side rails, while the middle is just a thin sheet of steel or aluminum designed to keep the rain out and provide aerodynamic shape.

1. The Dent Effect

If you place a stabilizer or a rubber block on the roof skin between the factory mounting points, you are applying pressure to a non-load-bearing surface.

What happens: Even if it feels solid when you’re standing still, the weight of the tent + people will cause the roof skin to pop inward. Once that metal stretches, it never perfectly returns to its original shape, leaving you with a permanent “puddle” or dent in your roof.

2. Vibrational Abrasion

Roof bars and tents are not static; they vibrate slightly at high frequencies while you drive.

The Damage: If you have an extra stabilizer sitting on the paintwork (even with a rubber pad), road vibration turns that pad into sandpaper. Dust and grit get trapped underneath, and within a single trip, you can vibrate through the clear coat and paint down to the bare metal.

3. Interference with Side-Curtain Airbags

This is a high-level technical detail most people miss. Modern cars have side-curtain airbags tucked right under the roof line near the doors.

The Risk: Applying downward stabilizing pressure in areas not designated by the manufacturer can slightly deform the interior trim or the metal lip where the airbag is housed. In the event of an accident, that extra support could potentially interfere with the deployment path of your safety systems.

Warning: Never use extra stabilizers or rubber blocks on the side rails between your roof bars. These create load points on hollow sections of the rail that aren’t designed to take weight. Most people assume a factory roof rail is a solid piece of steel that stretches the length of the car roof. On many modern SUVs and crossovers, they are actually hollow extruded aluminum or even reinforced plastic which is reinforced only where they bolt to the vehicle, and contain a much softer middle. If you place a stabilizer on the rail in the dead space between the roof bars, you are pressing down on the weakest, most hollow part of the rail. Under the weight of a tent and two adults, you can actually collapse or crimp the rail, making it impossible to ever slide a roof bar over that section again.

If You Want More Stability, You Need a Platform. Not a Stabilizer

If the tent feels unstable or exceeds the weight limit of two bars, the only safe mechanical fix is adding a complete third crossbar or switching to a full-length platform rack. However, weight limits still apply here.

Three-Bar Systems: If your roof rails are long enough (this is usually only found on vans or very large SUVs), adding a third complete roof bar distributes the weight across six mounting points instead of four. This is a safer way to spread and stabilize the load, but it still won’t increase your max weight limits and the weight of an extra bar will need to be factored into weight calculations.

Platform Racks: Systems such as the Thule Caprock replace the bars entirely. These platforms have a backbone system that bolts into multiple points along the car’s structural frame, spreading the static weight evenly without ever touching the fragile roof skin.

Better Alternatives for Heavy Loads

TentBoxes and roof tents are great but if your car’s roof isn’t compatible or up to the task, don’t force it. You have two world-class alternatives to look at:

The Thule Annex: Use a lighter, smaller roof tent but add an Annex, like the Thule Approach Annex. This gives you ground-level living and sleeping space without overloading the suspension.

The Thule Outset: If you want the “off-the-ground” experience without the roof stress, look at the Thule Outset. It’s the world’s first towbar-mounted tent. It unfolds in seconds, handles better (no wind drag), and leaves your roof free for bikes or kayaks. Arguably better than a roof tent.. and certainly safer.

We hope this has provided you with some useful information for using your roof tent safely and securely!

You’ve seen a TentBox and you want one, right?
