The techno bods over at McLaren are working on new technology which will completely do away with the wiper blade. Invented in 1903 by Mary Anderson, the humble wiper blade is largely unchanged in its 110 year history and when compared to the rest of the technology found in McLaren's cars its operation is positively archaic.
The new tech is borrowed from the military and is already in use on fighter jets. High frequency sound waves pass over the windscreen and effectively create a force field which prevents water, insects and dirt from sticking to the surface!
McLaren chief designer Frank Stephenson hopes that the new technology will be available on their road cars from as soon as 2015.
So until the big car manufacturers catch on it looks like most of us will be stuck with the traditional
wiper blade for a few years yet.
