Toyota announced a global recall this morning of approximately 7 million cars due to a power window switch problem that could potentially start a fire in your car! It effects about 1.4 million cars in Europe alone, with around 36,000 cars in Ireland effected. To put the total recall into context, this is equal to the same amount of cars sold in total in their last financial year!
Although no incidents of any sort have been reported to date, Toyota claim that a problem could arise due to a 'sticky' switch where an uneven application of grease during the switch assembly process. If the owner then applies commonly available lubricants, a fire could result under some circumstances.
This is the single largest recall since Ford recalled 8 million cars back in 1996 & Toyota Ireland will be recalling 9,232 Yaris, 10,357 Auris, 14,112 Corolla and 2,392 RAV 4 vehicles.
Toyota will be contacting drivers with the affected models over the coming weeks and asking them to bring their car in for checks to see if there is a fault.
Toyota said fixing the switch should only take about 60 minutes, will be free of charge and will be contacting drivers in writing over the coming weeks asking them to bring their cars in for a check in order to diagnose the problem.
Are they really the 'Best Built Cars in the World'?!!
