Between the end of the year and the start of a new one people can be stuck for money, with bills such as car insurance that can really sneak up on you. I know myself that my own premium finished on the 23rd of December, which really is terrible timing. With the start of the year just gone by a lot of people will be in a similar situation, looking to renew their car insurance. Over the past few years premiums seemed to have gone up rather than down, so we wanted to look into what steps people could take to save that little bit extra especially due to the purse strings being slightly tighter.
With the growing popularity of dash cams comes great news for drivers. Certain insurance companies are now offering 10% off premiums if the driver has a dash camera in their vehicle. This initiative is a great way for customers to save that little bit extra off their premiums, also making life easier for insurance companies to settle any claims in a more efficient time period. The benefits of having dash cameras are endless. Not only do they help you save money on your car insurance but they also protect you from any fraudulent drivers who are looking to make money at your expense. The level of car insurance fraud as becoming something of an epidemic, with the level of claims rising over the past 5 years. Statistics from the motor insurers bureau of Ireland stated that there was been a total of 1,572 claims from January 2018 till August of this year. Although this has fallen slightly by 144 claims, you can only begin to imagine the amount of those claims that are fraudulent. With video footage or genuine witness a lot of the time these claims are processed and the money is paid out to these dodgy characters. Certain things to look out for when driving is if the driver in front of you begins to brake check you, meaning they sharply press on the brakes in the hope you will plough into the back of them leading to them being able to claim against you. It's incredibly unfair but it happens so just be aware of this.
Due to these fraudulent claims its estimated that an extra €50 is required on top of your insurance to compensate for the cost of these claims. What worse is the cost of some of the quotes being dished out by insurance companies. We’ve come across multiple quotes that are asking for extortionate prices. My personal favourite was a quote from liberty insurance looking for upwards of 15k for a years insurance. A quote that was more than the value fo the vehicle in question!
So let's see can save you some money. As mentioned previously Axa was the first insurance company to bring the concept to Ireland, offering 10% when you have a dash cam fitted. The likes of FBD insurance also incentivise having a dash cam by offering €50 off their insurance policies. For the students out there we’ve also seen kennco offering 10% to accommodate students on a tight budget. There is value out there it is just a case of shopping around and comparing the different companies to one and other.
