As you know winter can bring bad weather, rain, snow, wind… and all of this can cause a serious effect on your car’s health increasing the chances of a breakdown. Here you will find some tips that will help you reduce the chances of your car breaking down during the harsh winter weather. The first thing that you have to consider is cars should be serviced regularly to keep them running well, this becomes even more important during the colder months. If it hasn't been serviced recently, consider booking it in before the winter. Not only could a service prevent problems, but a good mechanic should also be able to spot issues and give you the advice to prevent a future breakdown. Here in Micksgarage.com, we have all you need to keep your vehicle up to date with its service.
-
Check the condition of your tyres and Tyre Pressure – Check tyre pressure more frequently during winter months (at least once a week). As the temperature drops, so will the pressures in the tyres. The proper tyre pressure levels can be found on a sticker located on the driver’s side door jamb. We have a great range of traditional and digital tyre pressure gauges on site!
-
Replace Your Windshield Wipers & Washer Fluid – Fill the windshield washer tank with a good quality screenwash that has antifreeze components for cold weather use. Change your wipers if they’re chattering or streaking.
-
Check Your Antifreeze & Coolant levels - Top up your levels with the likes of Prestone Antifreeze and Coolant.
-
Check Your Battery: A fully charged battery in good condition will be needed to start an engine in colder weather. Make sure all connections to the battery are secure and remove any corrosion from the terminals/posts. Have the battery and charging system tested by a trained technician to see if the battery needs replacing.
-
While driving, test your braking performance to see if your brakes are fast and responsive. If there are any noticeable issues with your brake pads, brake discs or brake fluid get a mechanic to inspect them.
-
Check engine oil levels - frequently. Use the dipstick and don’t be afraid to top up your engine oil outside of a regular service. Remember to use the right grade/specification oil for your car (owners manual).
-
Check your heaters. It's important that they are working properly as they might be your only source of heat when stranded in your car. If the heating element in your car is not working properly it may be worth investing in an in-car heater
-
Check all your lights - day time lights, full beams, fog lights, brake lights and indicators. Make sure there are no cracked lenses or blown bulbs.
