Here's the rest of the post where you'll find the full videos of most of the cars featured in today's Free Friday:A list like this is always going to be subjective and highly personal and You'd never get two geeks to agree on this entirely, and if i were to write this again tomorrow it would probably be completely different! However, today, at this point in time, this is what i consider to be
the list of
the greatest sounding cars ever, organised into some categories
4 Cylinder:Subaru Legacy - The car that started a revolution, both in the rallying world and the tuning world. From the Legacy, spawned the Impreza which was
the affordable, practical, performance car for the 90's, the Sierra Cosworth for a new generation. That lazy sounding turbocharged flat 4 boxer engine is totally unique, there's nothing else like it:
Ford Escort BDA - In stark contrast to the Scooby, Ford's rally bred inline 4 BDA engine is an absolute screamer. To my mind this has the edge on all the more modern VTEC machinery:
5 Cylinder: Audi Quattro Sport S1 - One of the most easily recognised engines in the world due to its unique sound. Audi's 2.2 litre, inline 5 cylinder turbocharged unit sounds like nothing else. Producing up to 550bhp and combined with their revolutionary Quattro 4 wheel drive system Audi annihilated the competition in World Rallying:
6 Cylinder:This was the hardest section to write about because there are so many fantastic 6 cylinder engines. Most notable by its absence in this list is the Ferrari V6 fitted to the Lancia Stratos, and what about BMW's numerous M3 straight sixes? or maybe the Jaguar D Type? or TVR's own inline 6 out of the Tuscan? I could go on, here are my favorites:
Porsche 911 GT3 - This has to be the best sounding version of the flat 6 boxer engine to date:
MG Metro 6R4 - Better than the Stratos? I think so:
Austin Healy 3000 - Old skool, straight 6 awesomeness:
8 cylinder:Ferrari 458 Italia - The V8 is synonymous with American muscle cars, dirty great lumbering brutes of up 7 litres, fitted to stuff like the AC Cobra, Mustang GT 500 and so on. Ask the Italians to produce a V8 and this is what they come up with. Skip to 3.39sec for Vicky having a bit of a 'moment'
10 Cylinder:Lamborghini Gallardo - V10 engines 1st appeared in decent numbers in Formula 1 cars in the 90's. Now (thankfully) in the case of the E60 BMW M5, we even have them fitted to family saloon cars.
12 Cylinder:Ferrari 512m - When it comes to 12 cylinder engines, Ferrari really are the masters. You could really pick any 12 cylinder Ferrari model here, but these are two of my personal favorites. The V12 512m:
...And the flat 12 Ferrari 512BB LM:
